I exhibited again after a long hiatus. Moving to Italy, adjusting to a new life and a new job meant some prioritizations. I could continue my practice, which was already an achievement but starting a network of kindred spirits and of possible galleries is a labor of love and patience.

Earlier this month, I could put my work out there again and it still feels very strange. What is quintessentially a solitary activity (at least for me), laced with virtual presence & exchanges on Instagram, is becoming analog. Your artwork is framed, it is transported to the exhibition location where it will be hung on a wall. People that are not your close friends and immediate family are looking at it. I am still way too self-conscious to stand next to my work and I really admire artists who have personal booths. There must be cringe moments for sure. I still prefer to distance myself from the visitors. It was already a small victory to mention the exhibition to a few colleagues.

And then the show opens. (Un)Fair Milano 2023. https://www.un-fair.com/You go there almost every day, marveling at the level of the exhibitors and at the artsy coolness of the visitors. There are some galleries which exhibit works you love and some others you know are for another audience, which is fine. Great discovery with the gallery of Silvia Rossi https://www.silviarossi.it/. I even bought her a painting by artist Paolo Casazza, a poem on aged paper that plays hide and seek with an ink landscape.

That’s what I love about art. It is a way of life. You can be an artist who produces artworks and a collector who gathers their “coup de coeurs” as they occur. There is no contradiction, just a wonderful synergy of emotional experiences.
