Are You Still an Artist If You're Not Creating?

In a world that glorifies productivity and constant output, some artists may struggle with a gnawing question: Am I still an artist if I’m not actively making something? The pressure to continually post, share, and produce can be relentless—especially when inspiration fades or life demands our attention elsewhere.

But I believe that creativity is not only about output. Being an artist is fundamentally about perception—how we see, feel, and interpret the world around us. Even during times of creative stillness, the artist’s mind remains active. We are noticing shadows of leaves on a wall, catching a sentence in a book, storing inspiration for later. These quiet moments are not a departure from artistry; they are just another, possibly deeper, form of engagement.

I have just very recently emerged from one of those slower seasons. For months, my sketchbooks remained closed and inks waited in closed cabinets while I navigated the noise of daily life. Yet, I am proud that I never stopped collecting. I noticed patterns on the pavement or in the clouds, imagined color palettes from morning light on beloved flowers, and jotted down fragments of ideas. Creativity was there, quietly rebuilding itself beneath the surface.

And then one day, the moment felt right, I returned to my practice. The time had come. That return felt less like a restart and more like a continuation of something that had never truly stopped. The process felt richer, more intentional, and of course deeply satisfying.

A mentor once told me that creativity is like a well: if you draw from it constantly without giving it time to refill, it runs dry. Silence, rest, and observation are not detours - they’re essential parts of the artistic cycle. Trusting those pauses can be the most powerful thing an artist learns.

So yes - if you’re wondering whether you’re still an artist during a creative lull, I believe that the answer is a resounding yes. The work will return when the time is right. And when it does, it will carry with it the weight and wisdom of everything you lived while you waited.
